Laura Myers to Present at American College of Nurse-Midwives Conference

Look who’s co-presenting at this month’s American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) conference in Palm Springs — it’s Laura Myers, CNM, from NMRMC Women’s Health Center in Chanute! What better time to congratulate and thank her than during National Midwifery Week.

At the national convention, Laura will co-present on how the Kansas chapter of the ACNM has re-energized itself into an emerging advocacy voice across the state. It's an exciting opportunity to spotlight the growing impact of midwives in Kansas — and the people, like Laura, helping to make that happen.

If you’ve never met Laura, imagine a sunny, warm personality paired with clinical expertise and a deep passion for women’s health. She’s a natural fit at NMRMC Women’s Health as she guides patients through family planning, pregnancy, childbirth, and the full spectrum of women’s health.

“Midwifery is a calling for me — something I tried to ignore for a long time. But eventually, so many people in my life reinforced that calling, I couldn’t ignore it anymore. I’m so grateful for them, because I truly love this work,” Myers said.

The Role of a CNM

Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) are advanced practice registered nurses with specialized training in obstetrics and gynecology. They provide care across a woman’s lifespan — from adolescence through adulthood — including:

  • Pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care
  • Sexual and reproductive health
  • Gynecologic care
  • Family planning and preconception services
“It’s not easy, and it’s not always happy and sweet cheeks like people think,” Myers added. “But it is incredibly meaningful.”
Governor Laura Kelly has officially proclaimed this week Midwifery Week in Kansas, recognizing the vital role CNMs play in improving health outcomes — particularly in rural areas.

At Neosho Memorial in Chanute, midwives like Laura provide care exclusively within the hospital and clinic setting — not at-home births — and focus on low-risk deliveries.

“Laura is very passionate about her quality of care and establishing great relationships with her patients, her sweet and positive attitude is just icing on the cake,” she added.

NMRMC Women’s Health Center, located within the main hospital, is just steps from NMRMC’s Obstetrics Department — one of only four hospitals in 15 southeast Kansas counties offering OB care.

“Accessing maternity care in Kansas is becoming more difficult than ever, especially rural Kansas.  Bringing a midwife into the clinic helps us broaden our reach and provide essential care to more women,” Jenny Brady, NMRMC Women’s Health Center Director said.

“I also want to give a shoutout to my family — especially my husband and kids,” Myers said. “They’ve given me so much support and grace through all of this. I couldn’t do it without them.”

When asked what she loves most about her work, Laura didn’t hesitate:

“Any time I can help a patient reach a goal — especially when they work so hard to bring their baby into the world — that moment when they finally meet their child. To me, there’s nothing better.”

Happy Midwifery Week to our very own Laura Myers, CNM — and thank you for the care you bring to the women of Southeast Kansas.
